Hasbro, the company behind Monopoly, cancelled the survey they were launching on the 1st of October, in which Belgian players could chose the most populars streets of their country, which would then feature on the new Belgian edition of the popular board game. Given the current political climate and the problems between the Flemish and Walloon regions, a seemingly innocent voting about streets in both parts of the Belgium could get a political overtone. Instead, Hasbro is already contemplating making three versions for the Belgian market: a Flemish, Walloon and Brussels (and thus bi-lingual) edition. So, it seems that, in board game world at least, the end of Belgium is near! In the real world, this split is still far away, but then again, more than 100 days after tha last federal elections, we are nowhere near a new government. For those of you who want to understand what all the fuzz is about, read this excellent article by Ingrid Robeyns about ‘The ingredients of the Belgian cocktail‘.
